While memes are far from being the origin story of discriminatory humor, their proliferation and popularity reminds us that disparagement based on ascribed identities such as race, gender, sexual orientation, and so on can be normalized through everyday joking.

In the case of this study, the Eastern European Jews who immigrated to Israel dropped their Eastern European identity to perform as Israeli when addressing Jews who immigrated from Western Europe.Built as a Baltimore clipper (possibly as the vessel Griffen [1]), Henriquetta (also Henri Quatre) was a brig designed to be fast. A worthwhile lesson for any lover of British Naval history, but probably one of the most important little ships in the history of the British Navy because of its most holy mission. But, while there were some true do-gooders, the officers who risked their lives in hand to hand combat were mostly motivated by a desire for career advancement, and the crew by reward money. My interest was more in maritime history than the political angle, but this book does such an excellent job shedding light on the despicably horrific nature of the slave trade, that one can't help but become enmeshed in that angle of the story as well. Early 19th century British naval history is not especially on-brand for me, but I'm glad I let myself be surprised by The Black Joke.

Slavery and its consequences has been a hot topic in recent months and no sane person can condone it. I enjoyed the book overall, though it was pretty clear the author knew nothing about nautical affairs and hadn't bothered to run the book by anyone who did. A survey held on the Black Joke in 1832 stated that her timbers were rotten, and that "she is not, in our opinion, a vessel calculated fit for H. The surveyors attached examples of her timber; all that now remains of the famous slave-chaser is an envelope filled with brown dust in The National Archives. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. Black Joke', commanded by Lieutenant Henry Downes, was tender to the frigate HMS ‘Sybille’, commanding officer Francis Augustus Collier, to whom the inscription dedicates this plate. Rooks's narrative voice, at turns scholarly and sardonic, takes you on a journey through the seas and inlets around West Africa and into one ship's relentless, and often lonely, fight against the slave trade.

Enslaved Africans on arrival at Freetown became British, whether they wanted to or not, and were given a number of options. Marinerito had 15 of her crew killed; Black Joke lost one man killed and four wounded, one of whom was Ramsey. This compelling book is a useful addition to the canon, showing both the violence and inhumanity of the trade and the heartening role of those who stood against it. I’ll admit, though, that it was a bit too scholarly in approach for me to sit down and easily read it. The Black Joke began its sea life as a “slaver”, a ship transporting slaves from Africa to the Western Hemisphere. Rooks hopes to always be a student of history, though that hasn’t stopped her from studying everything else.

Sharing diverse scholarly perspectives on the impacts of ethnic humor, he argues that assessing the social function of humor requires an understanding of “who says what to whom under what contextual circumstances. This list is primarily focused on North American and European mobilizations of discriminatory humor—often what is labeled as “ethnic humor.
