Updating this review - about 2-3 years after I got this device, one of the elements quit working (one of the ones on the outside "flaps"). I can still use the waffle maker as long as I flip the waffle to the other side. When I go to heat up the waffle maker, it will start heating, then start beeping wildly. Turning it off and on again fixes whatever that issue is, and it continues to heat (except for the defective element) normally. I still continue to wipe it down with paper towels - never did find a better way to clean it. I just make sure it heats up for the full amount of time before using it. Continuing to rate it as a 3 star item. I'm actually unsure of how to wash the device - you can't immerse it, and it's pretty big to hold over a sink. I've been wiping the outside down with paper towels (it's a good idea to put a cookie sheet under it, because oil/butter gets everywhere if you grease the grids. But I was worried it would not be used after a while, and clean up in the past for all these sorts of things was horrible. Not with this one.
